  1. In, I think it was, 1930s America at the movies they used to insert a picture of a Mars Bar approximately every 20 frames during the film! By the the time it was over almost everyone would go in the foyer and purchase Mars Bars in abundance! This became known as subliminal advertising & henceforth became illegal in the USA!

    Regarding Joyce’s Hypothesis: Could it be there is some encoded subliminal message within Joyce’s shoes that has a hypnotic lasting effect on her fans? Call in the psychics & psychologists to find out!

    I think it’s more to do with body ornamentation, accessorisation & fetish? That being any object that accentuates a human form adds to it’s intrigue & attraction: earings, tattoos, mascara and so forth.

    Desmond Morris did a chapter on this in his marvelous ‘Naked Ape’ 1960s bestseller! There are all kinds of fetish including one on ‘wheelchairs’! That is the person isn’t so much attracted to the person wearing the chair as the wheelchair itself!

    I look forward to other ideas!
